While the girls team enjoyed a well deserved weekend of rest from competition the boys team sent two squads to compete at the Madison West Relays hosted at UW Shell on Saturday. The morning session saw some of our junior varsity athletes competing against varsity kids from "small" schools and the evening session saw our varsity athletes competing against the "large" schools competition. The meet saw many quality individual performances as some jv kids saw their first action of the season and the varsity kids took on some of the top performers of the state. As a coaching staff we continue to remind the athletes we are looking for progression and improvement. We are still working hard in practice and don't expect our best performances until later in the season. Meets at this time of year help us learn about what we need to improve and give us an opportunity to become better competitors. As we enter the last week of the indoor season and prepare for our first outdoor meets it is an important reminder that we take care of our grades, attendance, health, body, and everything to be ready to compete. As the outdoor season starts on Tuesday April 9th we will be half way through our training season but in full force for our competition season. There is no competition without being eligible & healthy so lets use this next week to make sure we are ready to compete outdoors.
The morning session saw many new faces to JMM track & field and allowed a lot of young runners to have an opportunity to compete at the varsity level. These kids are the future of the program and we hope they learned from their experiences and work on the things they need to improve so they can come back to this meet next season and compete in the afternoon session. The performance of the morning goes to Jake R in the 3200m run. Jake missed scoring points at the varsity meet by .02 but did set a PR by nearly a minute running 10:49.24. Other PR's in the morning included Ty S in the 55 hurdles, Bryce H in the 800m run, and Price R in the shot put. Continue to improve every day, take on the challenges your coaches provide you, and look towards the future.
The afternoon session was highlighted by scoring performances in the 55m dash, 3200m run, and 4x800m relay. Jester W improved his 55m time to 6.38 and placed 1st in this event. Jonah W set a new PR in the 3200m run with a time of 9:38.27 for 2nd place. Also, the 4x800 relay team of Sam B, Jonah W, Tyler M, and Josh P combined for a 3rd place finish and season best time of 8:27.19. These athletes continued to lead the team this weekend with outstanding performances. Additionally we had PRs set by Nick M in the 55 hurdles, Connor GT in the 1600m run, and Sean B in the shot put. In the relays, Jake A, Josh B, RaQuan C & Jester W combined for our season best in the 4x100 while Nick M, Micah P, Tyler M, and Josh P combined for our season best in the 4x400. Our team continues to make improvements in all areas of competition and this will lead us to be a stronger team by season's end.
